Revalidation
Revalidation is the process where registered nurses and midwives are required every three years to demonstrate to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) they remain fit to practice. Revalidation promotes greater professionalism among nurses and midwives and also improves the quality of care that patients receive by encouraging reflection on nurses’ and midwives’ practice against the revised NMC Code.
The NMC is introducing revalidation from April 2016 to:
- Raise awareness of the Code and professional standards expected of nurses and midwives;
- Provide you with the opportunity to reflect on the role of the Code in your practice as a nurse or midwife and demonstrate that you are “living” these standards;
- Encourage you to stay up to date in your professional practice by developing new skills and understanding the changing needs of the public and fellow healthcare professionals;
- Encourage a culture of sharing, reflection and improvement;
- Encourage you to engage in professional networks and discussions about your practice;
- Strengthen public confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions.
Our Commitment
How can we help you?
We will provide you with a Confirmer who will be either the Agency Director or the Clinical Lead; both of whom are Registered Nurses.
We will provide the forms you require for your practice related feedback, your written reflective accounts and Confirmation. Alternatively the written reflective account and Confirmation forms can be printed off via the NMC website revalidation.nmc.org.uk. You will also be able to print off your practice hours and C.P.D log templates on this site .
We will arrange a 2 hour Confirmation discussion with a Confirmer. This session will include:
- Practice Related Feedback & the respective Reflective Discussion
- Appraisal
- Confirmation
Your Confirmer will sign your Confirmation form, provided they are confident that the process has been robustly completed. You will then need to insert this into your portfolio. A copy of the confirmation will be held in your Agency file.
Your appraisal will also be copied for you so that you may add this to your portfolio.
Your Responsibility
How do I prepare?
Prior to your 3 yearly revalidation, you must maintain a portfolio of all the following:
- 450 Practice Hours
- 35 Hours of Continuing Professional Development – 20 hours must be participatory
- 5 pieces of Practice Related Feedback (a copy for the agency is also required)
- 5 written Reflective Accounts
- Professional Indemnity e.g. RCN Membership Card (plus a copy for the Agency)
You will need to bring your portfolio to the Confirmation discussion with your allocated Confirmer.
